LESSON STUDY PILOT AT HAYES SCHOOL
Two lesson studies took place in June at Hayes School, Bromley, Kent during the UK visit of 5 teachers from Singapore partner schools (Hong Kah Secondary School, Si Ling Secondary School and Hillgrove Secondary School). We were also joined from two UK teachers from Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, who had participated in the Singapore visit.
LESSON STUDY PROGRAMME
Two English teachers at Hayes School were involved in two separate lesson studies involving Year 7 and Year 10 English classes. Discussions took place prior to the first research lesson observation during which we discussed the context of the class, the intended outcomes of the teacher, the challenges and reviewed the lesson plan and resources. Suggestions were made for refinement and an observation focus was given to each observer, which included either a phase of the lesson or a focus on a specific student or group of students.

LESSON STUDY PILOT EVALUATIONS
The lesson study models used so far have been the Singapore Model and the UK/Japanese Model each with a slightly different focus.
The Singapore model explicitly focuses on pedagogy and implicitly on student progress, whereas the UK/Japanese model explicitly focuses on student progress and implicitly on developing teacher pedagogy. Our continued work with lesson study will enable us to use evaluations of the process to make suitable adjustments to the model for lesson study and potentially develop a hybrid in
order to maximise both the learning of teachers and the achievement of students in the immediate, medium and long term. Thus far there is strong qualitative evidence of the impact of lesson study on teaching and student progress, but
little quantitative data and therefore on-going evaluation of the programme will enable us to track the impact upon student outcomes and refine the approach in order to secure long term impact upon student achievement.
Use of a pilot whole school roll-out model during in the first year will allow evaluations to identify learning points for the introduction and implementation of this model and suitable refinements to be made before sharing
this model with other schools.
The Video capture and remote observation opportunities afforded by the project will enable us to evaluate which methods (e.g. in room/out of room, video camera/2 way mirror) lead to the most effective learning from the lesson study process and minimise the negative impact of being observed upon the actions of the students and teachers involved.
