LESSON STUDY AT HOLMES CHAPEL
We visited Holmes Chapel Comprehensive School, Cheshire and undertook a Lesson Study involving a Year 8 English class focussed on 3 underachieving learners. The lesson was observed from an adjacent observation room through a one-way mirror.
The Lesson Study process was:
Stage 1: Discussion about focus learners - profile and barriers to learning, lesson plan and planned activities
Stage 2: Research lesson observation
Stage 3: Post lesson observation discussion
Stage 4: Planning (collaborative) for next lesson taking into account observations of focus learners
Stage 5: Research lesson observation
Stage 6: Post lesson observation discussion
Due to the size of the group we were able to allocate 2 observers to each focus learner.
The teacher had predicted the likely response from each of the focus learners to each stage of the lesson and we observed and recorded observations to feedback to the teacher. We were able to make changes to the design of the subsequent lesson to accommodate the needs of our three focus learners and observed increased engagement in the 2nd lesson.
